Course Objectives
The main objective of this course is to think collectively about the major questions of philosophy of art. In order to do that, we will first learn how to express our ideas philosophically. Development of basic argumentation skills is a must for this purpose. Various artworks will be examined in order to relate them with different aesthetic theories and discuss the validity of the latter. Students are encouraged to build their own arguments and discuss them in the class. We will learn how to ask questions, how to think critically and how to appreciate artworks. This course will help students with different majors and backgrounds broaden their horizons.
Course Description
This course is an introduction to philosophy of art. The focus will be mainly on contemporary debates in philosophy of art along with aesthetic theories of some prominent philosophers such as Plato, Aristotle, Hume, Kant, Hegel and Nietzsche. We will discuss the main questions of philosophy of art such as: 'What is the nature of art? Does art have an intrinsic value? What makes it valuable? Is there a function of art? What is the relation between society and art? What distinguishes art from other stuff? How can we discriminate between different works of art? What should be our criteria for evaluating an artwork?
