MIM 425E - Architecture Today

Course Objectives

1 - Consider and discuss the architectural domain as an intellectual environment, 2 - Analyze modern an post-modern approaches to architectural design through case studies and examples, 3 - Discuss impacts of global issues on architectural domain and architectural objects, 4 - Analyze similarities and differences of contemporary World architecture with its counterparts.

Course Description

The aim of the course is to understand and analyze by research of the current architecture issues through design magazines, recent architectural design competitions, conventional and alternative institutions, prominent buildings and architects of the last decade. Studying the last decade positions the course at the edge of a more debated boundary of seemingly separate fields of study: history of architecture and critique of architecture in relation with professional practice and architectural design theory. In this context, investigating architects / professionals / offices / individuals; schools / institutions / organizations; publications; competitions; current issues of the world with influences and impacts on architecture through politics, economy, materials, technology, law-legal issues, etc. and various architectural representation types / medias is the goal. The following issues are also positions the course: Overview of the Intellectual Environment in Architecture; The Architect and his/her Professional Environment; Modernism and Post-Modernism in Social Theory; Modernism and Post-Modernism in Architectural Theory; Contemporary Paradigms and Approaches and Their Effects on Architectural Discipline: Sustainability, Ecology, Social Architecture, Architecture and Media, New Technologies and Architecture, Representation and Identity in Architecture; Architecture of Different Geographies: The Architecture of North and South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Far East, Middle East, and Oceania; Architectural Competitions and their effects on various disciplines; The State of the Architectural Domain in Turkey.
