Course Objectives i. To explore the significance of physical modelling as an integral part of a (conceptual) design process.
ii. To teach additive and reductive modelling techniques using diverse materials.
iii. To develop a material sensibility that reveals the tactile, visual and structural potentials of any material.
iv. To understand what each type of modelling approach can demonstrate and communicate.
Course Description This course is intended to equip students with model-making skills and knowledge necessary to solve design problems. The notion of the model in this course put emphasis on the production of physical artifacts using both physical and digital fabrication technologies. Together with learning model-making techniques, the student is expected to explore the value of physical models as an integral part of a design process for both academic and professional contexts.
Course Outcomes i. Learning basics of modeling techniques from cutting to finishing particular to types of diverse materials and gaining improved craftsmanship for them.
ii. Exploring the potential of materials by delving into related fabrication techniques.
iii. Learning about hybrid techniques combining physical and digital fabrication technologies.
iv. Gaining a three-dimensional understanding of spatial sequence and organization.
v. Identifying the appropriate material and physical modeling technique particular to the brief in a design project.
