ICM 221 - History of Architecture II

Course Objectives

1. To explore the continuity and changing of space, form, mass, façade, structure, and decoration with various examples of Anatolian Architecture trough the ages
2. To comprehend the various logic of design in East.
3. To introduce famous architect Sinan and survey his masterpieces as a case study.

Course Description

The continuity of the Asian pre-Islamic Turkish traditions in monumental façades and interior decorations; reflections of the spatial and formal qualities of the nomadic tent, in house and tomb architecture; the traces of the pre-Turkish building activity in Anatolia; The architecture of the Anatolian Seljuk State; Ottoman architecture and architectural decoration in the East-West context; questions of originality and identity.
