MAL 201E - Materials Science

Course Objectives

1. Introduce engineering materials consisting of metals, ceramics, organics, and composites, and their properties.
2. Introduce the relationships between the structural characteristics and the mechanical, physical, and chemical properties of materials.
3. Emphasize the importance of material selection in designs.

Course Description

An overview of engineering materials. Structural and physical properties of materials. Solid-state diffusion. Mechanical properties of materials and their measurement. Metal materials and phase structure. Solidification. Phase transformations and diagrams. Organic, ceramic, composite materials and their properties. Corrosion and protection methods. Electrical and thermal properties of materials.
