INS 459 - One Dimensional Finite Element

Course Objectives

It is aimed to solve bars numerically, using computers, by means of the finite element method and to clarify the algorithmic logic behind these programs. Formulation of a beam element is the basic step to begin and to understand the finite element method for the future analysis using various finite elements

Course Description

Bernoulli-Euler and Timoshenko theory for bars and beams, Principle of virtual work, Equation of motion, Shape functions, Strain energy, Total potential energy for Bernoulli-Euler and Timoshenko bars and beams, Stiffness, Spring elements, Displacement type finite elements, Mixed finite elements, Straight Bernoulli-Euler bars, Consistent mass matrices, Load vectors, Assembly of elements, Transformation matrices, Boundary conditions, Constraint forces, Free vibration.
