Course Objectives • Communications requirements for power systems
• Power systems as communications networks
• Computer networks concepts and principles
• Dominant network technologies
• Computer networking for power systems
Course Description Electrical power networks and communications requirements. Basics of communications engineering. Power System as a communication network. Computer networks. Open system and OSI reference model. Transmission media. Communications protocol for power system applications. Transmission and network switching. Intelligent electronic devices (IED). Real-time networks for power systems.
Course Outcomes i. A knowledge of basic data communications.
ii. A knowledge of power systems as an access network.
iii. A knowledge of computer networking and network protocols.
iv. An ability to design computer networks for power system applications.
