DFH 281 - Chemistry in the Marine Environment

Course Objectives

Components of seawater, chemical and physical properties. Dissolved oxygen and other gases in seawater. Trace elements. Carbon dioxide and carbonate systems. Climate change. Organic matter. pH and marine acidification. Nutrients in the ocean. Water quality. Water and wastewater treatment systems. Ship and shipyard sourced pollution. Corrosion and its control. Oil pollution, energy efficiency and emissions.

Course Description

1. Identify the chemical components and the trace elements in seawater
2. Describe the importance of dissolved oxygen and its temporal and spatial variability
3. Describe the relationship between carbonate systems and ocean acidification
