Course Objectives 1. To introduce basic Maritime English terminology.
2. To teach types of merchant vessels, their qualities and parts of vessels.
3. To inform on the deck and engine room crew and their duties, responsibilities.
4. To teach safety procedures on board and how to report.
5. To teach basic Standard Marine Communicational Phrases (SMCP) for engine crew.
Course Description Basic Maritime English terminology. Classification of merchant ships. Ship dimensions and tonnages. Ship structure and parts, their functions. Manning on board, responsibilities of the deck and engine room crew. Safety procedures on board. Emergency cases on board. Muster drills. Damage and accident report writing. Basic Standard Marine Communicational Phrases (SMCP) for engine crew.
Course Outcomes Students who pass the course will be able to;
I. Learn basic Maritime English terminology.
II. Learn types of merchant vessels and their qualities, and parts.
III. Know the engine room crew and their duties, and responsibilities.
IV. Learn safety procedures on board, know how to report.
V. Know how to use Standard Marine Communicational Phrases (SMCP).
