Course Objectives 1. To provide the basic concepts and principles of strength of materials.
2. To give an ability to calculate stresses and deformations of objects under basic types of loading conditions.
3. To give an ability to apply the knowledge of strength of materials on engineering applications and design problems.
Course Description Basic Concepts of Solid Mechanics, Mechanical Properties of Materials, Axial Loading, Shear Stresses and Shear Loading, Bending, Deflection of Beams.
Course Outcomes Student, who passed the course satisfactorily can:
1. Determine the geometric properties of area elements (a)
2. Calculate the internal forces in structural elements (a, e)
3. Distinguish two basic types of stresses(a, e)
4. Calculate the different stress components due to internal forces and moments (a, c, e)
5. Calculate the internal forces and deformations in statically indetermined systems (a, c, e)
6. Optimize the safety and economics for engineering applications (a, c, e)
