Course Objectives 1. To introduce the systematic design approach and detail overview of Conceptual Design
2. To give an understanding on the material selection and design using material science knowledge
3. To understand the limitations on manufacturing processes and to give an insight on the design ability using manufacturing knowledge.
4. To improve the goal recognition, creativity and intuition and also to enable the students to gain experience in machine design.
Course Description Mechanical engineering design activity and importance of mechanical engineering. Fundamentals of systematic design approach. Material selection for part design, Welded, soldered, adhesive, bonded, bolted joints and fundamental of design guidelines. Machining and other manufacturing methods and principle of design guidelines, assembly, recycling
Course Outcomes 1. Ability to apply basic rules of systematic design
2. Material selection for applications, geometry and manufacturing processes
3. Design of welded joint, soldered, adhesive bond and bolted joint
4. Design for machining
5. Design for Casting, forging and powder metallurgy
