Course Objectives 1. To teach students the processes of generation and accumulation of oil and gas
2. To enable students to understand main elements of petroleum system and practice on its concept
3. To teach petroleum exploration methods
Course Description This course covers the basic concepts of the generation of petroleum and natural gas in source rocks, their migration to reservoir rocks and their accumulation in various types of traps in the subsurface. The course will also introduce geological concepts and techniques applied to exploration for and production of petroleum and natural gas. Unconventional hydrocarbon resources are also introduced.
Course Outcomes Students who pass the course will be able to:
1. Acquire solid knowledge of petroleum systems in general.
2. Detailed knowledge of petroleum system elements and processes.
3. They learn the effect of present-day and past subsurface temperature fields on petroleum system
4. They learn the impact of burial history of a source rock on present-day hydrocarbon accumulations
