Course Objectives Since igneous and metamorphic rocks are the basic building blocks of the Earth, this course is designed to give the student a fundamental background in igneous and metamorphic rocks, necessary to understand the interior of Earth. Students have already learned crystallography, mineralogy, optical mineralogy and petrography before taking this course. So, they will continue to learn the principles behind rock forming processes and petrogenesis of igneous rocks in this course, both as means of identifying and describing the rocks and as a means of extracting clues to formulate about how the rocks formed in nature.
