JEO 362 - Hydrogeology

Course Objectives

The aim of the course is to provide the students with a general knowledge of the basic principles, concepts and techniques required in the exploration, development, quantity and quality determination of groundwater resources and to improve the students' ability to solve problems and apply concepts in this subject with the help of in-class exercises and assignments.

Course Description

Elements of the hydrological cycle: precipitation, evapotranspiration, runoff, infiltration, stream hydrographs and hydrograph analysis; Water budget; Occurrence and movement of groundwater; Water bearing properties of rocks and sediments; Aquifer types, springs , hydraulic properties of aquifers: porosity, hydraulic conductivity, transmissivity and storativity; Principles of groundwater flow: Darcy’s Law, hydraulic head, hydraulic gradient, Anisotropy and heterogeneity, groundwater level maps, groundwater-surface water interaction; Groundwater flow under steady and transient flow conditions and well hydraulics; Groundwater exploration techniques; Water wells and spring catchment area; Groundwater chemistry and quality, groundwater contamination, coastal aquifers and salt-water intrusion; Groundwater management: Managed aquifer recharge; Groundwater laws
