MAD 420 - Health and Safety in Mines

Course Objectives

1.To emphasize on the importance of the occupational health and safety activities in mining and the obligations of technical staff in this area.
2.To explain the functions of the state, the employers, employees and unions on occupational health and safety.
3.To give information on the causes of work accidents and occupational diseases, the results and measures to be taken.
4. To emphasize ergonomics in business and the importance of ergonomic work
arrangements.
5.To introduce the main issues concerning the technical supervision, rescue and technical expert witness.

Course Description

Introduction and history. The basic concepts related to the subject. Occupational health and safety from the law point of view. The effects of workplace on employess (chemical, physical, biological and psychological and sociological factors). The health and safety problems and their solution techniques in mining. Occupational diseases: definition, causes, protection and consequences. Occupational accidents: definition, causes, prevention and consequences. Ergonomics applications in mining. Personal protective equipment. Rescue in mines. Technical suprvision in mines. Expert witnees on claims about occupational diseases and accidents.
