Course Objectives 1. To provide an understanding of engineering fundamentals
2. To provide an understanding of basic stability of ships and marine vehicles
3. To offer various solution techniques to estimate the stability properties of ships and marine vehicles.
Course Description Area, volume, centre of gravity of calculations. Initial stability. Effect of weight movements. Stability at large angles. Free surface effect. Inclining experiment. Dynamic stability. Stability when grounded and stability in waves. Stability criteria. Longitudinal stability and trim calculations. Flooding calculations. Permeability. International rules for subdivision of ships. Damaged stability. Launching calculations. Statics and dynamics of launching. Pressure calculations.
Course Outcomes 1. Be familiar with the concepts of ship stability
2. Perform ship stability calculations
3. Be familiar with relevant international criteria
4. Develop leadership characteristics and able to carry on research on ship stability
