NAE 431 - Sailing Vessel Design

Course Objectives

1. To introduce sailing yacht design concept and its methods,
2. To establish an understanding of sailing yacht characteristics,
3. To improve aesthetics, and creativity,
4. To improve knowledge on sailing yacht hydrodynamics, structures and layout,
5. To introduce a review of relevant maritime regulations,
6. To establish an ability to develop a solution by using criteria,
7. To improve skills of presentation and report writing on technical and feasibility studies,
8. Additionally ethic and professional responsibilities of a naval architect in the process of small craft design are introduced as vital part of undergraduate education.
9. The course aims to enhance the individual skills as well as group work skills by means of lectures, class assignments and group projects.

Course Description

Basic hydrodynamics and aerodynamics applied to sailing yachts, sailing yacht equilibrium, stability, hydrodynamic and aerodynamic forces, sail and mast design, hull form and keel design, sailing yacht general arrangement design. hulls, sailing yacht propulsion systems, marine diesel engines, small craft rudders. Yacht structures, materials: composite materials, wood, aluminium yachts. System design for sailing yachts
