Course Objectives To emphasize the fundamentals of polymers as materials
2) To introduce the factors effecting the material properties at three level of focus a) molecularb) the micro (polymer chains and crystals) c) macro (Physical properties)
3) Introduction to industrially important polymers
Course Description Definition of plastics and polymers, Plastic Industry, Microstructure in polymers (Amorphous and crystalline), Thermal Transition of Polymers (Heat Distortion Temperature, HDT) Effects of thermal changes on polymers, the effect of molecular weight and polydispersity on physical properties of polymer, Mechanical properties of polymers,Test methods, Instrumantation, Thermoplastic materials: Polyethylene, Polyethylene Copolymers, Polypropylene, Polyvinyl chloride, Polystyrene. Engineering Plastics: Polyamides, Acetals, thermoplastic polyesters, polycarbonates, Acrylics, Fluoropolymers, high performance thermoplastics, Cellulosics.
Course Outcomes To classify polymers and plastic materials, to analyze the effects of micro structures on the physical and mechanical properties of polymeric materials
2) To analyze the mechanical properties of polymers; elastic behavior, stress strain behavior, impact resistance and predict the material properties due to this behaviors.
3) Knows mechanical test methods and instrumentation
4) Analyses material properties of polymers by considering the chemical and physical properties of polymers (environmental resistance, resistance to micro organisms, oxidation, solubility, flammability).
5) Knows the structure of thermoplastic materials, classifys and determines the right material for specific application
6) To choose appropriate polymer (Commodity plastics and Engineering Plastics) as a material depending on area of usage
