The course will proceed chronologically and cover the Ottoman and republican period with a focus on the early 20th century, in which the political foundations of contemporary Turkey were laid out.
In the course of the semester students will be introduced to a variety of primary sources. The major teaching goal is to develop an initial understanding of the complexity of Turkish history. This means that throughout the course one-dimensional narratives will be critically scrutinized and multi-focal perspectives be advanced.
