FIZ 458E - Optics II

Course Objectives

(1) Understanding the principles governing superposition of multiple light waves overlapping in a certain spatial region and dependence of the resulting interference pattern on the properties of interacting waves (amplitude, phase, frequency, polarization)

(2) Understanding and quantitative description of interaction of light waves with fine-size obstacles that obstruct or otherwise modify the wavefront of the incident wave (diffraction of light)

(3) Introduction to the formal treatment of optical processes in terms of spatial frequencies of light waves using the mathematical framework of Fourier transform (Fourier optics)

(4) Introduction to selected topics of modern optics (fundamental operating principles of lasers, elements of nonlinear optics)
