Course Objectives 1. To explain universal research design and methodology processes,
2. To identify and evaluate alternative research designs and data collection strategies,
3. To approach research through critical thinking,
4. To encourage principles of ethics and logic in scientific research,
5. To determine successful and reliable research outcomes.
Course Description The role of research in policy-making; Major practical, theoretical, and philosophical underpinnings of research with a contextual and practical emphasis on planning and its sister fields; Formal principles of research design as they apply to both qualitative and quantitative methods; Comparative advantages and disadvantages of different data collection methods; Universal ethical principles of research design.
Course Outcomes Ph.D. students who successfully pass this course gain knowledge, skill and competency in the following subjects;
1. Knowledge and ability to construct research designs,
2. Ability to apply causal and critical thinking to research,
3. Ability to attain research validity,
4. Competence in the main quantitative and qualitative methods in social policy,
5. Knowledge of common research pitfalls in scientific processes,
6. Knowledge of ethical research principles and their practice implications,
7. Ability to critically assess common research designs and methods in planning.
