ZMG 513E - Coastal and Offshore Geotechnical Engineering

Course Objectives

1) To introduce the application of specific examples of geotechnical engineering into coastal and offshore engineering problems and to have the empirical and analytical methods that are used in coastal and offshore geotechnical engineering be used in related engineering calculations.
2) To provide an understanding of the dynamic properties of seabed under the influence of waves.
3) Introducing the necessary tools for analytical and numerical investigation of the dynamic behavior of coastal protection structure-subsoil system under waves.
4) Introducing the necessary tools for analytical and numerical investigation of the dynamic behavior of the offshore structure-seabed soil system under waves.
5) To understand the instability of seabed under waves.

Course Description

Coastal and Offshore Geotechnical Engineering, Basic Soil and Wave Mechanics, Seabed Soil Instability (Bearing capacity, Wave-induced liquefaction), Coastal Protection Structures: Geotechnical Design Concepts, Offshore Renewable Energy Structures: Geotechnical Design Concepts, Numerical Modeling of Seabed Dynamic Response (Introduction to modeling), Wave-Induced Seabed Response around a Coastal Structure: a) Breakwater Problem, b) Suction Caisson Problem, Advanced Concepts
