MTO 502E - Advanced Synoptic Meteorology

Course Objectives

1. The aim of this course is to advance the Weather Analysis and Prediction subjects.
2. Advance theory included atmospheric structure analysis and determination of the origins as mid-lattitude atmospheric events.
3. Detailed analysis of the synoptic scale events via high technology instruments (satellite, radar etc.).

Course Description

Recent developments in forecasting and analysis. Structure and behavior of synoptic circulation systems with special attention given to storm development, energetics and severe weather. Structure and analysis of the wave cyclone, Characteristics of frontal zones, Frontogenesis, The analysis of mid-latitudes cyclones, tropical cyclones and extratropical cyclones using by radar and satellite technologies. Diagnosis of vertical velocity; quasi-geostrophic omega equation, applications, and alternative formulations. Diabatic effects on cyclogenesis. General reviews on modelling of synoptic-scale events. Discussion of current research topics.
