EUT 545 - History of Early Republican Design

Course Objectives

1. to create a relation between the policies of the Early Republic and design in general, manufactures, and the everyday objects,
2. to gain knowledge on the design and designers of the Early Turkish Republic,
3. to see the synchronic reflections of the Western modernity in Turkey through design and objects.

Course Description

Mainstream design approaches of the first half of the 20th century, “the new against the old” theme of the Republic and related policies, debates on industry and crafts in Turkey in the 1930s with comparison to the West, the concept of “yerli malı” and domestic/national exhibitions,
“Design” and its criticism in the Early Republic, modernist advice literature in the periodicals of the time, the designing figure and his production environment: decorative arts, textiles, ceramics, glassware and graphic arts, “the cubic”, the reception of Art Deco and modern designapproaches, national modern approaches through examples, international modern approaches through examples, discussion on the relationship between design of the Early Republic and contemporary design in Turkey.
