Course Objectives
1. To introduce basic literature and scientific research methods regarding the science/technology studies in the Ottoman world.
2. To introduce the ability to evaluate science/technology activities in the Ottoman world in a comparative perspective.
3. To develop the ability to think theoretically and conceptually.
4. To develop the ability to communicate and discuss issues effectively.
5. To develop the ability to read and understand texts, make research and write.
Course Description
Methodology and sources in the history of science and technology; Development and institutionalization of the ‘Ottoman Science and Technology’ discipline; Basins and traditions contributing to the Ottoman world; Astronomy; Medicine: medical institutions, theories, alternative cures and authentic contributions; Sefaretname’s as a source of scientific interaction; Printing press and literacy; Transportation and communication technologies; Military technologies; Maritime technology: ships, shipyards, submarines, new methods and techniques; Railways; Rise and development of the modern aviation; Mühendishanes and military engineering schools; Darulfünun: Emergence of the modern university.
Course Outcomes
Students who succeed in this course will be able to:
1. Familiarize with the field of historiography, methodology, literature, policies and institutions regarding the Ottoman science and technology.
2. Develop a sense of assessing and locating the Ottoman science and technology potential within the broader spectrum of world history
