Course Objectives
• To have informance and awareness about interval, tetrachords, pentachords, cesni and makam in Turkish Makam Music.
• To gain capacity of perception about usul in Turkish Makam Music.
• To have informance and awareness about form and styles in Turkish Makam Music.
• To evaluate historical and recent approach in Theory of Turkish Makam Music.
• To evolve new approaches with using different analysing techniques in Turkish Makam Music Theory.
Course Description
Interval, tetrachords- pentachords, cesni and makam in Turkish Makam Music. The concepts of makam, Safiyüddin, Meragi, Anadolu Edvar Traditions, Kantemir, Abülbaki Nasır Dede and Hüseyin Saadettin Arel. Classification systems of makam in written source and musical pieces. The concepts of usul in Turkish Makam Music.. Makam of Rast, Uşşak, Bayati, Isfahan, Acem, Acem Kürdi, Hüseyni, Muhayyer, Neva, Tahir, Hicaz, Şehnaz, Nikriz, Examples of analyzing and applying musical pieces.
Course Outcomes
Graduate students who successfully pass this course gain the following knowledge skills and competencies;
I. Information, skill and practice about the concepts of makam in accordance with historical and recent approaches.
II. Information, skill and practice about the concepts of usul in accordance with historical and recent approaches.
