Course Objectives
1. An evaluation of the sociological circumstances of the musical production and experience.
2. An analysis of the musical expressions in their socio-historical context.
3. Developping an approach to the musicology as a multi-disciplinary activity; conceiving the necessary methodological instruments for such an aim.
4. A review of the musicological literature in a critical perspective
Course Description
Elements of production. Conditions of production. Consequences of production. Collective units of meaning; the individual micro-politics of meaning; the function of the music. Music as a time construct. Music as a social class indicator. Music as sexual referent. Music as religious catalyst. Music as political metaphor. Rationalization of music. Commercialization of music. Popular music.
Course Outcomes
Graduate students who successfully pass this course gain the following knowledge skills and competencies;
I. Skill on evaluating music as a sociological process and context, and not only as a merely technical or esthetic fact.
II. Competency on having original reflexions on the musical questions of Turkey.
III. Skill on using intellectual instruments for an elaborated scientific thinking and critical approach.
IV. Competancy on developing original perspectives to the musical facts and their social contexts.
V. Skills on getting elementary skills to reach a scientific proficiency at academic level in universal standards.
