Course Objectives
1. Through readings and discussion, to provide students with an awareness of the main trends and developments in periodisation and cultural context of Western music of the eighteenth through twentieth centuries,
2. To help students develop an understanding of musical performance and patronage through a study of the historically evolving forms of musical production and consumption,
3. Through focused listening to selected examples, to develop students’ critical listening skills
4. To provide students with an understanding of the representative genres and stylistic features present in Western music,
Course Description
A chronologically organised survey of the history of European music, historical periodisation, reception history, biographies, the roles of composers, performers, and listeners, music in relation to social institutions and political movements, ‘serious’ versus ‘popular’ traditions, and avant- garde approaches
