Course Objectives
1. To develop student’s knowledge of, and vocabulary relating to, music technologies,
2. To teach basic editing and sequencing skills in software based digital audio workstations,
3. To explore significant topics in music technology criticism,
4. To teach fundamental musically relevant principles of acoustics and psychoacoustics,
Course Description
Fundamentals of acoustics, physics of sound, timbre and spectra, psychoacoustics, signal processing, anatomy of a musical note, sonic properties of musical instruments, microphone theory, studio and location recording, fundamentals of digital audio, sound sampling and synthesis, room and hall acoustics, current and historical trends in music technology criticism,
Course Outcomes
On successful completion of this course, students will gain the following knowledge, skills and competencies:
1. Competency in communicating effectively with audio professionals,
2. Competency in identifying and discussing aspects of musical recordings relating to spectrum, dynamic range and sound image,
3. Skill in understanding and performing basic operations on software based digital audio workstations,
4. Information on applying knowledge in fundamentals of acoustics and psychoacoustics to relevant situations in music composition, scholarship and performance,
5. Competency in applying knowledge of aesthetic issues in music technology discourses to everyday musical situations,
