Course Objectives
1. Through readings and discussion, to develop an intellectual awareness of one of the main contextual and interpretative issues in the study of Music History,
2. To develop an understanding of the interplay, within musical repertoires, of compositional intention and audience reception
3. To further students’ understanding of compositional choice within stylistic parameters
4. To familiarise with how current ideas on the chosen topic have been formed and are expressed
Course Description
A focus on the governing conventions and compositional priorities as revealed in instructional manuals, treatises, composers' sketches, theory/practice relationships; modernist and traditional approaches to melodic syntax; dissonance treatment and chromaticism; polyphony; text setting; and formal closure,
Course Outcomes
Graduate students who successfully pass this course gain the following knowledge, skills, and competencies:
1. Knowledge of the historical background, cultural and intellectual settings, and reception, of the studied compositional strategies and frameworks
2. Competency in considering creativity within the context of stylistic parameters and constraints
3. Skill in working through alternative endings to uncompleted musical works
4. Knowledge of a good up-to-date working knowledge of the main English-language secondary sources on the chosen area
5. Competency in researching and presenting essays in a standard musicological format,
6. Competency in utilising the standard bibliographical tools and resources used in the study of composition
