Course Objectives
1. Through readings and discussion, to develop awareness of the main trends and developments in periodisation and cultural context of particular repertoires and stylistic categories within Western music,
2. Develop an understanding of how musical styles develop and are categorised,
3. To familiarise students with current ideas on canon formation,
4. Through focused listening to selected examples to provide students with critical listening skills and an understanding of the representative genres and stylistic features present in Western music,

Provides focused study of repertoires as de-limited by criteria other than those of the single composer or genre: by, for instance, combinations of medium, compositional 'school,' culture, patronage, nationality and period
