SNT 104E - Mythology and Art

Course Objectives

1. to provide knowledge about the importance of Mythology as a remarkable source of inspiration, and its role in the formation of culture and civilization,
2. to provide a rich and multi-perspectival point of view to the Art, History and Culture,
3. to provide to get knowledge about different eras and styles in the History of Art,
4. to provide different understandings of Beauty through history of art, in this way to provide a rich and multi dimensional esthetical sensibility and thus to cultivate designing creativity.

Course Description

The Birth of Myths; The sources of Greek and Roman Mythology; Formation of Cosmos in Greek Mythology; The Fundamental Personalities and their Myths in Greek Mythology; Influence of Greek Myths on the myths of other cultures ; Mythological depictions in Ancient Greek, Hellenistic and Roman Art; Stylistic and conceptual differences in Mythological depictions in the artistic periods and art movements like the Renaissance, Mannerism, Baroque art, Rococo, Neo-Classical art, Romanticism, Pre-Raphaelite and Symbolism; Mythological depictions in Modern and Postmodern art
