SNT 115 - Modernity and Visual Culture

Course Objectives

This course aims;
1. to discuss the events that shaped the artistic development in western world and especially the
“modernity” phenomenon,
2. to examine the modernity’s effects on culture both in the world and Turkey via various data,
3. to gain the skill to interpret art not only as an aesthetic value but also as a cultural asset.

Course Description

A brief introduction to the development of the Western art and modern age, the discussion of
the modernity concept, the impact of the Industrial Revolution to the visual culture as well as its
effects on science, technology, art, politics, economy, etc. in this context, determining the
situation in Turkey and analyzing the development of western culture in Turkish art and culture,
the criticism of modernity and transition to post-modernism, new expansions in Turkish art.
