JDM 626E - Geohazards

Course Objectives

- Understanding the basic concepts and control mechanisms that govern geohazards,
- Understanding and interpretation of physical principles, frequencies and magnitudes of geohazards
- Significance and the extent of environmental, human and economic losses due to geohazards

Course Description

The course gives an overview to different types of geohazards, their significances and consequences, and how do disasters affect the natural environment and human? Main focus will be on Turkish geohazards, but extreme events from other parts of the world will be discussed. Main emphasis will be on landslides, floods, tsunamis and earthquakes, for which the geological and physical process will be discussed in addition to potential consequences and methods for quantifying hazard. In addition, we will discuss the links between different types of geohazards, their triggering mechanisms and domino effects.
