Course Objectives 1. To introduce the basics of material and manufacturing methods in industrial design,
2. To inform the students about the material and manufacturing method selection regard to the design processes, efficiency, and environmental impacts,
3. To inform the students about the forming, cutting, joining, and finishing techniques of different materials,
4. To encourage the students to research the current developments about the material and manufacturing methods.
Course Description The importance of knowledge on material and manufacturing methods in industrial design. Physical, mechanical, and internal structure properties of materials. Material behaviors. Metals. Polymer-based materials. Wood. Glass. Ceramic. Textile. Composite materials. Nano and smart materials. Forming technologies: Sheet material forming, Molding techniques, Extrusion, Casting techniques, Forging, drawing, blowing, and pressing techniques. Lamination techniques. Cutting Technologies. Joining Technologies. Finishing Technologies. Material and manufacturing method selection and applications.
Course Outcomes Students who passed the course satisfactorily would:
1. Have knowledge about general properties and classifications of materials and manufacturing techniques.
2. Have knowledge about the processes and impacts of the materials and manufacturing methods.
3. Have competency to select the appropriate material and manufacturing method in industrial design
4. Have the skill to research the current developments and future projections about materials and manufacturing methods.
