SBP 322E - Transportation Planning

Course Objectives

In order to solve traffic problems, transportation planning methodology has been improved. In this methodology, transportation problems defined as a result of social, economic and physical features of the urban environment. The course will introduce this methodology which will be significant in shaping the urban areas. In the course, special problems and needs, main design factors such as; function, utility, safety and user participation will be discussed.
The main objectives of the course are:
• To emphasize planning principles, constraints and process,
• To introduce planning elements for urban as well as regional and national transportation problems,
• To stimulate the consideration of harmonious relationship between movement channels and land use including social natural environment,
• To provide guidance for convenient and safe movements such as; bicycle and pedestrian circulation within communities.

Course Description

Transportation planning process. Identification of goals and objectives. Definition of study area boundary and zones. Data collection related to social and economic features, land use and transportation system. Transport models. Prediction of future transport system. Evaluation of the future alternative transportation plans. Decision making and public participation.
