GEO 401E - Physical Geodesy

Course Objectives

The main aim of this course is to provide students for gaining the use of modelling the earth’s shape, gravity field (and changes) with temporal changes using various data and methods and applying these models in specific geodetic studies.

Course Description

In this course subjects in physical geodesy such as the analysis and modelling the parameters of the earth and earth’s gravity field with temporal changes is covered. The use of a national precise geoid model in geodetic infrastructure and in engineering applications is important. Geoid models are today important components of national geodetic infrastructure and determination and use are subjects of the geomatics engineering applications. In the course, terrestrial and satellite data and methods used in the calculation of the geoid model and earth’s gravity field are mentioned following the introduction of the basics of physical geodesy.
Then it is continued on the selection and the use of geoid modelling method in practice by examining the relationships between the definition of the height systems and the functions of parameters regarding the earth’s gravity field in geodesy.
