MAK 213 - Material Science

Course Objectives

1. To introduce engineering materials including metals, ceramics, organics and composites and to describe their properties.
2. To explain the relationships between materials' structure and their mechanical, physical and chemical properties.
3. To emphasize the importance of materials selection in design.

Course Description

Introduction to materials science. Classification of atomic structure of materials. Crystal structures and defects. Mechanica and physical properties of engineering materials. Solid state diffusion. Phase diagrams and solidification. Ferrous and non-ferrous alloys and their heat treatments.
