JEO 422E - Neotectonics

Course Objectives

The main objectives of this course are
(1) to improve student’s knowledge on earthquakes
(2) to evaluate active tectonic and seismic hazard of a region
(3) to recognize morphotectonic features associated with active faults
(4) to plot maps and graphics using computers

Course Description

This course covers observations, mapping, measuring and modelling of crustal deformation due to plate motions, volcanos and sea level changes. The topics covered are as follows:
- Global seismicity and seismotectonics
- Focal mechanism, size and intensity of earthquakes
- Plotting maps and earthquake data
- Crustal deformation during the earthquake cycle
- Tectonic geodesy (InSAR, GPS and levelling)
- Morphotectonics
- Paleoseismology
- Neotectonics of Turkey
