KIM 111 - General Chemistry I

Course Objectives

The aim of this course is to provide students with a fundamental understanding of the basic concepts, principles, and applications of chemistry. By the end of the course, students will be able to:

Comprehend the structure of atoms, the logic of the periodic table, and the principles of chemical bonding.

Understand the physical and chemical properties of matter and perform chemical calculations.

Apply fundamental laws to explain the behavior of gases, liquids, and solids.

Balance chemical equations, use stoichiometry, and work with solution concepts.

Gain awareness of laboratory safety and basic experimental techniques.

Overall, the course is designed to equip students with the essential background needed to understand chemistry as a science and to apply it in engineering and other scientific disciplines, while fostering analytical and problem-solving skills.

Course Description

Significant figures, chemistry and stoichiometry, chemical formulas and reactions, atoms and atomic theories, structure of the atom, periodic table and selected atomic properties, chemical bonding, molecular geometry, gases and gas laws, liquids, solids, solutions and their physical properties, thermochemistry, chemical kinetics.
