PET 608E - Transport Processes in Por.Med

Course Objectives

1. Delivering the philosophy for the physics of porous and fractured media and their fluids moving within, as well as for the order of magnitude and scale and continuity indispensible for modelling of them; 2. Providing the comprehension of porous and fractured media structure and of the momentum transport and balance in single and multiphase flow of oil, gas, water, solution, etc types of fluids saturating them; 3. Providing the comprehension of energy transport processes and mechanisms within the porous and fractured media and their saturating fluids of oil, gas, water, solution, etc.; 4. Providing the comprehension of interfacial phenomena and mass transport processes and mechanisms within the porous and fractured media and their saturating fluids of oil, gas, water, solution, etc.;

Course Description

Structure of porous media. Significance of magnitude of scale and continuum approach. Fundamentals of momentum, energy, and mass transport. Derivation of Navier-Stokes equation and Darcy’s law. Transport of momentum, energy, and mass in single and multiphase flow through porous and fractured capillary media. Filtration, diffusion, and dispersion in capillary media. Fick’s Law.
