EUT 361E - Contemporary Issues in Design

Course Objectives

To inform students about critical perspectives in design practice by presenting project examples.
To inform students about the theories for critical investigations of cultural production in the 20th century.
To indicate links between the above mentioned theories and project examples by weekly annotated readings.

Course Description

Introduction to critical theory; Benjamin-The consequences of mass production on cultural artefacts and their environment; Design and the modernist ideology; Design and the post-modern ideology, Italian Radical Design Movement; Pragmatic approaches-Design for social innovation; Small Change- Nabeel Hamdi, Saskia Sassen; Everyday practices- Ezio Manzini; Interrogative Design-Kryztof Wodiczko; Baudrillard, simulation and simulacra; Dora Harraway, The cyborg manifesto; Michael Rakowitz, Lucy Orta, Andrea Zittel; Noam Toran, Constantin Boyn, Knowear; Critical Design- Dunne and Raby; Project presentations.
