ZMG 605 - Unsaturated Soil Mechanics

Course Objectives

Fundamental principles of unsaturated soil mechanics and its engineering uses, defining the stress state variables for unsaturated soils different from the saturated soil mechanics, engineering properties of soils and description of the factors that affect these properties, determination of engineering problems associated with those characteristic factors by which developing the skills in evaluation of necessary parameters and the limits of these parameters for soil related problems.

Course Description

Introduction to unsaturated soil mechanics; Phase properties and relations, stress state variables, net normal stress, suction,suction measurements, matric and osmotic suction, permeability, shear strength and shear strength measurements, bearing capacity, slope stability and volume changes.
