MDP 629E - Advanced Electronic Music Composition

Course Objectives

1. To modify existing compositional techniques or provide new ones, in response to a series of guided compositional challenges, as a means of forging an individual compositional style.
2. To provide students’ own perspective on contemporary electronic music discourse through analysis of current debates.
3. To help students to respond to this discourse by suggesting possible future practices and aesthetic trends through further writing and discussion.

Course Description

An in depth study of the aesthetic and technical challenges facing composers of electronic music today. Students will confront a series of compositional challenges, and through their responses formulate the elements of a personal approach to electronic music making. Issues specific to electronic music composition are explored through weekly workshop sessions and analysis of genre defining works composed since 2000.
