MZJ 508E - Identity Issues in Music

Course Objectives

• To develop conceptual framework for examining how a society’s musical culture is a reflection of its concepts of individual and communal identity.
• To acquire analytical skills for describing functions and the uses of music in social structure.
• To examine identity constructions reflected in the music practice referencing to Ethnomusicology literature.

Course Description

The role of music in the exploration, definition, and expression of individual and communal identity in worldview cultures. Concept and Theories of Identity. Identity Dynamics in Religious Musics. Music in Postcolonial Perspectives. Diaspora: Cultural Memory and Music. Tourism and Cultural Identity. Sexuality and Gender. Race and Ethnicity.
