Course Objectives 1. Through weekly lesson and assignments, to create a competency in the necessary contrapuntal and harmonic techniques necessary for composition,
2. To develop an understanding of musical process and forms, particularly those of contemporary music,
3. To teach how to realise and present their compositions in performance, if necessary making revisions under the guidance of the instructor,
Course Description Advanced studies in composition, Further development of technique and form in the writing of medium to large traditional and mixed ensembles, Further development of writing for advanced characteristics and modern effects of instruments, The development of thinking of orchestration with the latest sounds, and varied techniques,
Course Outcomes Graduate students who successfully pass this course gain the following knowledge, skills, and competencies:
1. Skill in developing an appropriate set of strategies for composition
2. Deeper knowledge of contemporary musical styles
3. Competency in developing a sense of stylistic self-awareness
4. Competency in commenting on a range of musical and aesthetic issues regarding creation, originality, intention, and emulation in contemporary music,
5. Skill in revising, arranging and presenting their own music
