Course Objectives 1. To examine Aşık Art, which supports musical culture of Turkey as a living tradition.
2. To investigate and preserve both national and global traditional heritage.
Course Description The concept of Aşık. The basic principals of Aşık Art. Master-apprentice relations. Repertory. Instruments. Works of masters. Literal and musical genres, forms, and types. Folk artists as narrators/story tellers. The traces of aşık art in some particular historical written sources. Aşık art in 20th and 21st Century. Aşık music compilations from fieldworks. Aşık characters in Turkic World. Aşık schools. Aşık-s as a popular artist type. Bibliography of Aşık Art of Turkic Countries.
Course Outcomes Graduate students who successfully pass this course gain the following knowledge skills and competencies;

I. Knowledge on Aşık Art is a substantial historical musical source of Turkish musical culture.
II. Knowledge on Aşık art and characters in other Turkic countries.
III. Skill on Aşık tradition can be evaluated as an education model.
IV. Knowledge that it is possible to learn from Aşık-s in terms of popular musical cultures.
