Course Objectives
To provide a foundation for studying world musics,
2, To develop an understanding of the functioning of ethnomusicology in academic
discourse,
Course Description
Introduction to history, scope, and methods of ethnomusicology (incorporating an overview of the
application of selected scholarly discourses to music); brief discussions of literary criticism,
cultural studies, ethno-aesthetics, critical music studies, gender, identity studies, performance art,
experiential views, and reflexivity,
Course Outcomes
Graduate students who successfully pass this course gain the following knowledge, skills, and
competencies:
1. Knowledge of the basic historical events of ethnomusicology,
2. Competency in developing a perspective on the use of ethnomusicology in society,
3. Knowledge of the basic theoretical approaches used by ethnomusicologists,
4. Knowledge of the methodologies used by ethnomusicologists,
5. Skill in applying theories from diverse disciplines to music,
