Course Objectives 1. To teach about music spanning over more than two centuries and connecting it to a more
broad perspective, that of ideology,
2. To develop interdisciplinary methods of research for the current phenomena,
3. To teach interdisciplinary approach to analyzing historical musicology issues,
4. To teach the students to research and present essays in a standard musicological format,
Course Description Ideological aspects of certain periods, how these are connected to music produced and music
performed, music and national identity, music in totalitarian regimes, music and memory,
Course Outcomes Graduate students who successfully pass this course gain the following knowledge, skills and
competencies:
1. Competency on categorising, contextualising, comparing and evaluating musical
examples from different periods and musical genres
2. Competency on possessing a philosophical awareness of the nature and function of
music as a production of ideology,
3. Competency on commenting on a range of musical and aesthetic issues regarding
creation, originality, intention, and emulation,
4. Knowledge on historical periods, philosophical and political terms,
5. Knowledge on the standard bibliographical tools and resources used in the study of
music and ideology
6. Ability to research and present essays in a standard musicological format,
