TKY 509 - Schenkerian Analysis

Course Objectives

• Establishing a theoretical understanding of Schenkerian Analysis
• Be able to analyze a piece of music using Schenkerian techniques
• Learn about the structural foundations of tonal music
• Building a fundamental framework for further studies on prolongational theories and analyses.

Course Description

An introductory investigation of Schenkerian Anaysis, including Schenker’s theory of structural levels and prolongation in tonal music, concepts of Urlinie and Ursatz, elaborations of basic structures, reductive and prolongational analysis, graphing techniques and analytical applications on the classical repertoire of tonal music
